Free Phones When You Switch Carriers

T-Mobile, Metro, Boost, and Cricket currently offer free iPhones and Android phones worth up to $1,299 to customers who switch. Here's exactly how to qualify.

How Free Phone Deals Work

Carrier "free phone" promotions aren't handed out to everyone — they're specifically for customers who port in a number from a competing carrier. This is the carrier's way of winning customers away from rivals, and they're willing to give away a $1,000 phone to do it.

The key requirement: the number you port in must come from a different carrier family. T-Mobile, MetroPCS, and Boost are one family. AT&T and Cricket are another. Verizon and Visible are a third. You can't port within the same family and still qualify for the promotion.

That's where a port number comes in. Instead of porting your own personal number, you purchase a verified number from the right carrier family — then use that number to activate your new line and unlock the deal.

Common Questions

Do I have to give up my current number?

No. The port number you purchase is used to activate the new promotional line — you keep your existing number and transfer it to the new account separately, or just add the new line.

Why can't I just use any old number?

The number must be an active line on the correct carrier. Carriers verify this during the port-in process. Numbers that are inactive, on the wrong carrier, or from the same carrier family won't qualify for the promotion.

Is "free phone" really free?

The phone is free via bill credits applied monthly over 24–36 months. You'll typically pay upfront and get reimbursed on your bill. If you cancel early, remaining credits stop. The phone itself costs nothing as long as you stay on a qualifying plan.

How quickly can I get a port number?

Port In Numbers delivers in 5–15 minutes. Order online, receive the details by email, and head to the carrier store the same day.
